Understanding betting odds formats

Betting odds represent the probability of an outcome and determine your potential payout. Different regions use different formats, but they all express the same underlying information. This converter lets you switch between all major formats instantly.

Decimal odds

The standard format in Europe, Australia, and Canada. Decimal odds show your total return per unit staked including your stake. For example, odds of 2.50 mean a 1 unit stake returns 2.50 units (1.50 profit + 1.00 stake). The implied probability is simply 1 / decimal odds.

American odds

Used primarily in the United States. Positive odds (e.g. +150) show profit on a 100 unit stake. Negative odds (e.g. -200) show how much you need to stake to win 100 units. The favourite is shown with a minus sign, the underdog with a plus.

Fractional odds

Traditional format in the UK and Ireland. Expressed as a fraction like 3/2, which means 3 units profit for every 2 units staked. Fractional odds show profit only, not including your returned stake.

Asian odds formats

Hong Kong odds are similar to decimal but show profit only (decimal minus 1). Malay odds use a system where positive values are like Hong Kong odds for underdogs, and negative values represent the inverse for favourites. Indonesian odds work like American odds but expressed as a ratio rather than based on 100 units.

Implied probability

Every set of odds implies a probability of the outcome occurring. For example, decimal odds of 2.00 imply a 50% chance. Understanding implied probability is essential for identifying value bets — situations where you believe the true probability is higher than what the odds imply.
